How To Promote Your Race Through TikTok

Written by Cody Beavers

Now is the time to think about new and creative ways you can engage with your community for your upcoming events. However, your community might not be on Facebook or Instagram anymore. They could be using a social media app called TikTok.

What is it:

TikTok is an emerging social media app that has grown exponentially over the past few months. It has been downloaded over 2 billion times and has over 500 million active monthly users. Content creators can shoot videos up to 15 seconds long but can create 60-second videos by combining videos. You can also apply filters, add music, and edit your video within the app.

How it works:

Once you download the app and create your account, you will be able to explore your feeds. The “For You” feed are videos suggested to you based on your preferences and behaviors on the app, making the feed more personalized over time. The “Following” feed are videos created by the people you choose to follow.

Promoting your events through TikTok:

Once you begin promoting your races. Start with creating straightforward content through TikTok. A great way to get your participants excited about your event is to give a tour of your event route. Be sure to focus on exciting landmarks and scenic views along the way. Like any race, your community is going to want to know how to prepare themselves. Create a meal prep for them through TikTok and collaborate with a food sponsor if you have one.

Engaging your community during your events:

Race weekend is here, and your community will be documenting their experience through TikTok. Start engaging and following accounts that are tagging your organization or who are using your hashtags. Start by reposting videos from your race throughout the day. After that, begin capturing inspiring or funny content during your event. This content can go viral quickly on TikTok.

Additional TikTok tips:

  • Promote your sponsors, specifically your beverage sponsors. Offering post-race and recovery tips can be a great way to entertain your community after your event has ended.

  • Not all content needs to be generated by you. Many TikTok creators will let you repost their content if you ask.

  • The Discover tab is a great resource to help you find relatable content. You can also save specific hashtags like #marathon.
