New Hire Spotlight: Steven Camacho
Written byAt haku, we pride ourselves on a diverse and unique collection of talent and personalities. One of the newest members of our haku family is Steven Camacho.
Steven was born here in South Florida, but lived over five years in Orange County, California. He’s currently a senior at FIU, a computer science major, and enjoys going to the gym, watching basketball and football, and spending time with his family and friends.
What is your role at haku?
I’m an Associate Software Engineer, and my tasks revolve around branding events. I’ll be working on things like email templates and registration pages, as well. As I learn more about the system, I will start to handle more complex tasks.
Do you have any unique talents?
I’ve actually played the piano for about 2-3 years, but I’ve played less often lately. I want to get back into it.
How would your friends and family describe you?
They would say I’m down to earth, I always have their back with everything, I’m trustworthy and I’m always there for them. I don’t have a huge circle but the small circle I have knows they can count on me.
If you were not a software engineer, what would your career path have been?
I would have gotten more into finance or a combination of finance and economics. I’m learning more about stocks and options and investments. I enjoy learning about how money works in the big scope of things, not just spending on day-to-day transactions but more about the long-term mentality of how saving and spending works.
What is your favorite place you’ve traveled to?
I would say Colombia to visit family. It’s the most fun family trip I’ve taken. Orange County, California has so much culture and perfect climate and you can find anything and anyone from all over the world, like you can in Miami.
Where is your dream vacation?
One day I would love to take my future wife all over Europe, but away from touristy spots. I prefer more secluded destinations. It can still be a big city but just not the common names everyone thinks of. Going to Bali would also be amazing and exotic.
If haku announced a last-minute day off for tomorrow, what would you do with your suddenly free day?
Definitely start by sleeping in. I would still go to the gym, then spend the day with my girlfriend and friends. Also, I would probably take some time to get caught up with Rails which is a backend platform we use here. I wanna learn the intricacies of it quickly, so I’m better off here long-term.
What are some of your long term career goals?
I have some things I want to accomplish - I want to create a product maybe having to do with trading or the financial industry. I want to build on my career as a software engineer and grow into more senior roles, and learn more about how programs and platforms are planned and how to build out my own platform in a sort of entrepreneurial role. Firsthand experience working with this team is something I can’t get in school.
What is your definition of success?
I would say success is enjoying the process, not just waiting to get to the destination. You sometimes are waiting so much for the final result, whether it’s school or work or something personal, that you don’t just stop and think about the process. Enjoy the grind. That will make you successful long term.
If you could go back in time and change something about your life, what would it be?
I think I would probably have looked to explore more earlier in life. School wise, academically, just learning more about many different things so that I had a better vision of where I could go with my career sooner. I would have talked to more people and gotten more opinions sooner about software development. In short, I would have gotten more access to information so it didn’t feel like such a crash course when I was already in college.
We are very excited to continue to grow our incredible team of engineers and having Steven become a key part of the haku family.
