Written byOur haku team continues to grow. The newest member is the Director of Strategic Partnerships, Tiago Kaniak. Originally from Curitiba, Brazil, Tiago has lived in many places and now resides in Montreal, Canada. Let’s get to know him a bit more.
What's your role at haku?
As the Director of Strategic Partnerships, my main objective is to establish and maintain key relationships with external organizations, businesses or individuals that can contribute to the overall success and growth of their own organization. Creating synergy and leveraging opportunities that can enhance haku's market position, reach and revenue.
How would you describe yourself to someone who’s never met you?
I consider myself to be a relaxed person with an amiable disposition. I’m always looking for opportunities to socialize with others and enjoy their company. One of my favorite ways to do this is to host barbecues, where I can share my love of good food and outdoor cooking with my friends and family.
How did you get into the tech industry?
In 2019, I joined an insurance technology company which introduced me to the tech world. Since then, I've been hooked and fascinated by the constant advancements in technology. Keeping up with these advancements is a challenge, but one that I enjoy.
What has been a memorable life experience for you?
There are just so many memories that come to mind, but one that really stands out is the time I surprised my parents by showing up at their doorstep after being away for over a year. The look of pure surprise in their eyes was such a heartwarming moment for me!
What are some of your hobbies?
I am often eager to explore new technologies and gadgets. I also enjoy spending time in the kitchen and experimenting with new recipes. Whether I am trying my hand at baking or grilling, I find the process of creating something from scratch to be incredibly rewarding.
What inspired you to move from Brazil to Montreal? How has the experience been so far?
After spending a year in New York, I went back to my hometown Curitiba, Brazil. But I felt like I needed a new challenge, this time with the French language. That's when I discovered the Quebec Immigration Program. I applied and, long story short, after 9 years, Montreal and Canada have been home sweet home for me. I absolutely love it here!
Are there any Canadian customs or traditions you’ve embraced since moving here?
Having a long winter really helped me appreciate the time I spend outdoors, whether practicing cross-country skiing or snowboarding. It’s been a great way to stay active and enjoy the beautiful winter scenery.
What is an important lesson you’ve learned that helps you career-wise or personally?
In my experience managing different personalities, I’ve learned the value of demonstrating empathy to team members. This has helped me keep my team focused and accomplish what was expected of them.
Where is your dream vacation?
Every year I have a new dream vacation, at the moment it would be a trip to a few places in Asia (Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Indonesia).
